Selenium Because selenium is such a strong antioxidant, it could just as readily have been grouped with them. As an antioxidant, it is most effective in neutralizing polyunsaturated fatty-acid radicals. Working in conjunction with glutathione (itself considered to be one of the master intracellular anti-oxidants), selenium - through a process known as chelation - is able to help cleanse the body of toxic heavy metals such as lead, mercury, and cadmium. Studies have shown that adequate quantities of selenium in the diet also help to diminish the risk of cancer and heart disease, and to strengthen the immune system. Selenium is necessary for the production of glutathione peroxidase.
The amount of selenium in the diet depends to a considerable extent on where we live and what we eat.
The better vitamin pills will have selenium, and other minerals, included in their formulation. | ||
