Antioxidant Vitamins
Grape-Seed Extract

Grape-seed extract contains a group of compounds called procyanidolic oligomers (PCO), which are part of a larger group called the bioflavonoids.

Although bioflavonoids may occur elsewhere - in the skins of certain fruits, for instance - it is the bioflavonoids that are found in grape-seed extract that exhibit the most powerful and most effective properties as antioxidants. Some have even estimated the efficacy of grape-seed flavonoids at 40 or 50 times that of Vitamin E. As a further benefit in this regard, grape-seed extract also enhances the antioxidant effects of Vitamins C and E by 20 to 50 times.

Grape-seed extract has also exhibited strong anti-inflammatory properties, which may possibly produce beneficial effects in the treatment of arthritis. Because it blocks the enzyme responsible for producing histamine, grape-seed extract is an excellent anti-allergy, anti-cold remedy as well.

A few years back, a glass or two per day of red wine (No more!) taken regularly was shown to be beneficial in promoting heart health. It is now thought that this benefit is not only due to the alcohol involved, but to the bioflavonoids from the grapes themselves. These PCO bioflavonoids work against the oxidation of LDL, thereby reducing its ability to form arterial plaque. They also help maintain and increase the elasticity of arteries.

Further, with improved vascular health conferred by these bioflavonoids, comes improved tissue health. One way in which this improved tissue health manifests itself is in the form of healthy gums and teeth. This improved tissue health also shows up in terms of a strengthened and improved immune system.

As was the case for most vitamins (except for Vitamin D, produced by the action of sunlight on the skin; and indirectly in the digestive tract, for Vitamin K), the body is unable to manufacture bioflavonoids. Therefore, to obtain the strong antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects brought about by grape-seed extract, a good supplement is strongly recommended.
