Section III
Natural Born Killers

There are microscopic things that try to kill us. Usually these are bacteria or viruses, but they may even be cells of our own bodies, such as out-of-control cancer cells.

And then there are things in us that try to kill them. These are our natural born killers.

Our natural born killers, white blood cells or leukocytes, originate in the marrow of long bones (along with our red blood cells), and as well, in the lymph nodes and the thymus gland. Members of this protective army include, neutrophils, NK (natural killer) cells, and Tcells. Each of these serves to protect us against different threats:

The neutrophils, for instance, engulf foreign invaders of almost any kind.

The NK cells battle against would-be cancer cells.

The T-cells specialize in taking on viruses.

And it is the I-cells that are at the forefront of this army of natural born killers.
