Section III
The Liver

The liver is the largest organ of the body, not counting the skin. It is something like a complex production plant or factory in the body. One of its main functions is the conversion of sugar into lipids and carbohydrates, which it then stores for use between meals.

It also breaks down aging red blood cells that need to be removed from service. The liver not only takes LDL out of the blood, but makes it. Some of the material the liver removes from the blood is used in its production of bile, which is passed on to the gall bladder, and from there to the intestines, where it assists in the digestion of fats.

Since HGH stimulates LDL receptor sites in the liver, it improves liver function in removing LDL from the blood. Also, since HGH is instrumental in bringing about repair work in cells both directly and as IGF-1, it is effective in stimulating liver cells to repair themselves. This is particularly important because if the liver is not working up to par, a greater burden falls on the kidneys, eventually overtaxing them in their job.

Numerous studies have shown this "healing" effect of HGH on the liver. However, whenever liver damage is extreme, whether from injury, disease, or the overconsumption of alcohol, the restorative effects of HGH are considerably diminished. As Dr. Chein has stated, "...the anabolic properties of growth hormone positively affects protein metabolism, suggesting that GH therapy could be used to treat those with chronic liver disease."

For the liver, as for other parts of the body, the watchword is prevention. If we begin maintaining optimal HGH levels before we come to poor health, there is the increased likelihood that we will not come to poor health.
